‘Words in the Landscape’ WRITING WEEKEND
Abriachan Forest Trust in partnership with Moniack Mhor
May 19th-20th

The programme will run with up to 12 participants on Saturday 19th from 10am-5pm at Abriachan Forest Trust, then on Sunday 20th 10am-3pm at Moniack Mhor. Using walking and the landscape as a prompt to creative writing, participants will be encouraged to write creatively, tuning their senses using the rhythm of steps to overcome the blank page and stimulate ideas. The course will involve a non-strenuous walk with guided writing activities along the way and offer time to develop an individual piece of writing.
An overview of the weekend includes a walk in the Abriachan Forest with guided note-taking activities followed by lunch in the classroom. Further walking and writing activities with discussion will explore the union between landscape and words. Sunday at Moniack Mhor opens with a creative writing workshop, tutorial time and lunch finishing with a review of the participant’s writing and feedback.
The workshop will be led by Linda Cracknell, writer of short stories, radio drama, and creative non-fiction. Some of her words have won the Macallan/Scotland on Sunday short story competition, been shortlisted for the Saltire First Book Award and the Robin Jenkins Literary Award for environmental writing. Linda’s website can be found at www.lindacracknell.com. An active blogger, she suggests that ‘if we walk with a curious mind, we learn even more.’ She was the recipient of a Creative Scotland Award in 2007 for a project linking walking and writing.
Participants should bring:
A notebook and writing implement they can use on the move even if it's raining, warm/ waterproof shoes and clothing, any relevant reference material and an example of inspirational writing about the Highlands

A Sporting Chance
by Cartoon Theatre
Monday May 21st - 7pm
Tickets on the door: £8/ £6/ £4

The popular Highland company Cartoon Theatre is touring its new show "A Sporting Chance" just in time for the Olympics.
Cartoon Theatre is well known for its family shows that combine live performance with interactive animation. Let the fun and the games begin! A comedy adventure as one man battles with his personal athletic best. Combines live performance and animation.

Our hero receives news that he is the lucky winner of a seat at the 'Games'. However to take his place in time, he has to make the journey to the mainland immediately. Nearly missing the ferry, Donald's journey is a series of adventures, mishaps and meetings that mysteriously resemble many well-known sports. Whether it is crossing the Minch in his row boat or the 100m dash to escape the scavenging seagulls, he battles on.

Finally he finds himself entering the stadium but on the wrong track! Luckily the gruelling 'training course' of his adventure has prepared him well. Donald is rewarded, not with a grandstand seat, but with something much, much better - a happy ending to his personal journey from spectator to participant.

Company Information / Previous Shows
Cartoon Theatre has been entertaining children and families throughout Scotland for the last 15 years. 'A Sporting Chance' is our latest production. We are constantly improving and innovating our techniques to make theatre that is part animation and part live performance, a form of theatre that delights kids and adults and uses the most up-to-the-minute technology to offer them a great, live entertainment experience.

Ist June - 4th June 2012

Set amidst arguably the most beautiful Glen in Scotland, Outta Affric will see walkers journeying around, up and down several Munros and Corbetts. For 2011 we aim to entice you on walks that will arm you with new skills, hopefully raising your awareness of this outstanding wild and mountainous environment.

During the festival, we re-visit some old friends on classic Affric walks, whilst adding new twists to established routes. We will even introduce you to new walks on Munros not yet visited as part of the Festival.

DAY ONE    Friday 1st June

Jubilee Woodland Walk.  A gentle bumble around the beautiful ancient Caledonian Pine Forests of the historical Guisachan Estate, discovering the flora, fauna and history.

High Level 2       Beinn Fhionnlaidh (1005m) + Carn Eighe (1183m) NOTE spaces are limited on this walk and early booking is recommended to avoid disappointment.  Until the boatman returns from his over-wintering in Denmark, we are unsure if the boat will be running across Loch Mullardoch in June.  If there is no boat, we will walk in and out via Glen Affric.

DAY THREE  Sunday 3rd June

Over the weekend we will experiment with ancient ways of cooking. You will forage for greens during the day, cook a wild lunch and prepare an evening feast on Saturday night. Cookery techniques include fire side cookery, hot stones and pit cooking. The latter is a fantastic technique for cooking meat or slow stews. Two fires are lit, one in a stone lined pit and the other on a pile of smaller stones, the food is prepared in a cast iron dish or wrapped in dough and, once the fires have died down, placed in the pit and covered with the smaller hot stones and then earth or sods of turf. After about 4 hours you have the novel experience of digging up your deliciously slow cooked feast! You will also try outdoor bread baking and preparing clay baked fish.

Sat 2 June 2012 - Sun 3 June 2012.

Future dates 21/22 July, 18/19 August and 22/23 September
