Canal Custodians

There are many people already involved on a daily basis on the Caledonian Canal. British Waterways Scotland employees take great pride in their work but resources have to be focused on safe passage of vessels and maintenance.
The Waterways Trust Scotland would like to encourage some local help in a variety of canal related ways - in return you will receive training and skills development as well as meeting new people and gaining satisfaction.

Roles will include:

• Practical conservation team - Woodland management including invasive plant removal, tree planting, access and path work etc. The aim would be to gradually create a volunteer team (18 yrs to 98!) that meet regularly throughout the year to deliver a practical task. The output will be a healthy, social day that benefits access and conservation.

•Wildlife surveys - come along to training sessions looking at different groups of flora and fauna - learn more and start adding to much needed record databases.

There is also an 'armchair option' to sift through a database (The National Biodiversity Network Gateway) and collate the relevant records. Specialist advice will be on hand to help you grow your knowledge and understanding of Scottish wildlife.

• Canal Interpreters - helping visitors to make the most of their Great Glen trip! Initially we can foresee manned information points on good weather days by the flights at Fort Augustus. This is probably the busiest flight along the canal and the lock keepers just don't have the time or focus on busy days to answer the many questions asked.

We need some people who do! Training in people engagement and presentation skills provided. Possibilities for Neptune's Staircase at Corpach too. This work may also be extended to include working with school groups or booked groups too?

• Research and archives - SCRAN (Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network) is a charity & online learning resource base with over 360,000 images & media from museums, galleries, archives and the media.

We are looking for people who would enjoy carrying out research and collating local information/interpretive material and then uploading it to this excellent resource.

Full training would be given - a basic knowledge of how to use a computer would be a good starting point. This task can be carried out in the comfort of your own home in any weather!
