A82 ton-up boss escapes driving ban
Inverness Courier 03/08/11
LOCAL businessman caught speeding outside Inverness on the A82 at over 100mph escaped a driving ban at Inverness Sheriff Court today.
Robert Girvan (41) of Loch Ness Holiday Park, Invermoriston, admitted driving on the Dunain straight, Inverness, on April 8, at 104 miles per hour.
Sheriff Margaret Neilson heard Girvan, who travelled 40,000 miles per year in connection with his business, already had four penalty points on his licence.
His solicitor Ewan Robertson pleaded for a substantial fine rather than a driving ban.
Mr Robertson said Girvan had been stuck behind a car towing a caravan and the caravan appeared to him to be unstable on the road.
“He accelerated in an Audi R8 which is a high performance car and he reached this speed then immediately dropped his speed back down,” said Mr Robertson.
The solicitor said the businessman was an important employer in the area and contributed greatly to the local economy.
He added: “The loss of his licence would impact on his ability to maintain a level of employment he has at present.”
Sheriff Neilson told Girvan his speed was grossly excessive. “I hope you have learned your lesson”, she said.
She endorsed his licence with a further six penalty points and fined him £1,000.
