£700,000 Gaelic education boost for Highland schools
02/11/11 - STV News
Gaelic education in Inverness has been boosted with the opening of three new special-purpose classrooms.
The £700,000 project has seen two new classrooms opened at Bun-sgoil Ghaidhlig Inbhir Nis school in Inverness and another at Glenurquhart Primary in Drumnadrochit.
Growing demand for Gaelic education meant Highland Council had to commission the extension to the two schools.
The Bun-sgoil school, Scotland's first purpose-built Gaelic medium school, saw a sharp rise in pupil numbers in its second year.
Councillor Michael Foxley, council leader, said: "The extensions to the two schools demonstrate the continuing and growing interest in Gaelic medium education in the Highlands.
"We are delighted with the support we have received from the Scottish Government in being able to proceed with these two important investments in our communities."
Highland Council provides Gaelic education at 21 nursery schools, 21 primaries and 13 secondary schools.
Donald McLachlan, Morrison Construction operations director, said: "It is pleasing to see the children enjoying the new building and it really brings our work to life.
"We all hope that pupils and staff members are very happy in their new home."
